About Us

The American Hurling Company is a family run business based in the town of Bloomington in the idyllic hill country of Southern Indiana. We make our hurls from Indiana white ash using century-old techniques. When we're not shaving the ash or watching the children, we're walking the woods looking for a nice spur.

The J. O' Coigligh family have a rich history of woodworking and a commitment to perfection that has been passed down through coopers, boatbuilders, and hurleymakers.  Presently, two generations of hurleymakers, Joseph and Stephen, are shaving the ash, working together to preserve this 3,000 year-old tradition. Through local grants, we have visited with the great hurleymakers of Ireland, listened to their philosophy, studied their respective county traditions as well as personal aesthetics, and from these lessons coupled with years of development, we press our family stamp to the ash.

In the fall of 2007, we opened our newest shop, our third in so many years. Though it pales in comparison with many of the great workshops of Ireland, our little shop will provide us with safer working conditions, hurley machining capability, more shop space space than we have known, and room to grow.

We have made many significant changes to our hurls and stock to fine-tune their quality and play. We do our own logging and processing to better control the results and the freshness of our stock. Interestingly enough, many of the hurls we sell are sawn from ash planted by Stephen's grandfather on our family farm.

We want to be your local hurley maker. The Irish have given a beautiful game to play on pitches stateside, but without a proper supply company, hurling will not prosper. First and foremost, we are hurling growers. We want to supply grass roots programs with quality hurleys, sliotars, and footballs at affordable prices and quick delivery to further the sport and Irish culture.
